Wembley Stadium, London
Capacity: 90,000
Main Sport: Football
I still remember my first ever football match. You can’t get much bigger than England v Brazil at Wembley, the “Home of Football”! This was back in 1995 when the ground still had it famous twin towers. I still remember the atmosphere and the sound of drumming that I could still hear when I closed my eyes that night.
Fortunately I have been able to return many times since that date, including several times since the ground was completely redeveloped for both football and music concerts.
Wembley may be the home of football but unfortunately it isn’t always the easiest to get to and from on a match day. I have almost always got the underground to Wembley Park and then enjoyed the iconic walk up Wembley Way with the great view of the arch at the end. Unlike league grounds, there are the same volume of burger vans etc so I have preferred to eat before getting to the ground. Leaving can be a longer queue along Wembley Way. I remember taking some Canadian family and as we exited, I was asked “Is that people?”
Despite these “misgivings”, it is still a great experience heading to Wembley and one I hope to do many more times to come.
