As we count down the final few hours of 2025, I thought I would have a quick look at my year in running.

The headline figure is that this year I ran a total of just 263km. It is a little scary to think just a few years ago I had months with not too dissimilar numbers. In fact it is the lowest since I got my Garmin account in 2018 (and I was doing more before then as well). It was only just shy of the past two years but still…

It hasn’t been a consistent pattern though. I managed a single run of 5km in the first two months of the year and have been a little closer to 40km months towards the back end as I start to try and find my way again (I do seem to have been writing about finding my mojo forever though!)

Possibly what is surprising is that this was the 2nd highest number of parkruns I have ever managed in a single year with my barcode being scanned 13 times this year.

The year didn’t start brilliantly when my New Year’s Day plans were kiboshed by all my planned events being cancelled due to the storm. Then a couple of days later my first run in Scotland was knocked on the head due to snow and ice in Edinburgh.

The 13 events included three new locations for me: Rutland Water parkrun, Chevin Forest parkrun and my first overseas event at Danehy Park parkrun. I also had return visits to The Pastures parkrun in Alnwick while on holiday and then Christmas Day at Roundhay parkrun. The bulk of the runs though we’re still at my home event of Pocket parkrun.

So what for 2026? I’ve been saying it for ages but the aim is to return to a place of good fitness and more regular mileage. I have the 2026 Great North Run to look forward to in September and that is the main goal.

However, first to enjoy the last vestiges of 2025 and then we go!
